HUB Cycling Connection is organizing a week-long cycling event to get people to commute on their bikes.
October 29 to November 2 is Bike to Work Week in Metro Vancouver. Organized by HUB: Your Cycling Connection, the event encourages commuters to make the switch from gasoline to pedal power—while also providing a valuable means for measuring and marketing sustainable transportation initiatives in the Lower Mainland.
Throughout Metro Vancouver, HUB has organized prizes and commuter stations to encourage people to participate in the event. Prizes include brand new bikes, gear, clothing, and free tune-ups. Commuter stations have been set up by various community groups. Be sure to check the event schedule for special locations and times for free food, drinks, and mechanical tune-ups.
How to participate
Register at the HUB website and map your commuter route. Then, log your commutes each day to build a record of kilometres biked and greenhouse gases reduced.
You can also register your workplace and sign up team members. The companies or organizations that sign up the most members and log the most kilometres will appear with the largest listings on the HUB website!
It’s good to bike
Need some encouragement? The HUB website offers reasons to get those feet pumping:
•Get healthy. Your commute can be your exercise routine. It can save you time and money spent at the gym.
•The costs of a car. On average, it costs $7,400/year to own and maintain a car, or around two months\’ wages for the average worker.
•Cut down on your personal greenhouse gas emissions. Our database will calculate the CO2 that you save.
•Engage your community. Meet your neighbours. Breathe fresh air. Enjoy our beautiful cityscape.
•Get out of traffic. Some commutes are faster by bike because of less traffic lights and congestion.
•Have fun and enjoy the freedom that comes with cycling.
•Be energized for work. Exercise naturally releases endorphins that give you a boost.
